March 10th, 2008

On Thursday March 6th two of our students, Petter and Dave were scheduled to fight at Patong Boxing stadium. Petter won his fight easily in the first round. He knocked his opponent down 3 times and then the 4th time the ref stopped the fight. Dave, who was coming off of a 1st round win at Bangla Stadium lost a 5 round decision. He fought a seasoned fighter and had a war, trading kicks with his opponent. Kru DaySicDa wasn’t scheduled to fight that night, but another Thai boxer had pulled out and the promoter needed someone to fill the spot. DaySicDa stepped up and was to be that fighter. His opponent turned out to be someone from Tiger Muay Thai, a rival gym here in Phuket. When Will, the owner of Tiger Muay Thai, learned that his student was to fight a trainer from Chalong Chai he refused to let his student fight, giving no specific reasons for this.

Chalong Chai Muay Thai and MMA gets tattooed

January 24th, 2008

dsc00625.jpgIt was good ideas, big dreams and a business trip that brought us to Bangkok. Unbeknownst to the both of us we would end up guided by a series of spontaneous taxi rides riddled with indications and the whereabouts of Wat ????????????? aka the Tiger temple.
The tradition of sak-yant tattooing dates in the region of 2500 years. For us tattooing was just something we enjoyed but add that to a mix of cultural tradition, blessings by monks and long stainless rods imprinting the sakyant and sanskrit permanently onto the skin of your soul and you start to believe in something that words often fail to clarify.
We hadn’t planned to get tattooed this day it was just something that we had talked about doing someday. The both of us had previously indulged on to our backs particular pieces of sakyant design although under modern machines.
This day Sean added another Tiger to his collection and I an ancient sanskrit prayer emanating good fortune, prosperity and good health. After the budddhist disciples had finished their work and chanted the assosciated prayer we descended the temple to engage the head monk. He imparted his bleesings upon all of our sakyant and we both entertaing the possiblity of the moment willingly took the next step of having our foreheads and tongues blessed and tattooed in an ancient oil that the bretheren of the Wat had made in the holiest of vows for the good of all.
Describing the memory of this special undertaking is somewhat difficult. To try and write about the melancholic feeling that this occasion emanted I am unsure of whether I can do. To re-tell the stories to our students and share these memories in the camraderie of the Chalong Chai dynamic is something we enjoy and proudly divulge. Go to www.tigerpitt.com and click on gallerys to see pics.
